Question

My question is why are Malawi cities so rich and the countryside so poor?

  1. Malawi, like many other African Nations, was colonized. Most of the resources were shipped out of Africa and minimal industrialization took place. In 1964 when she gained her independence from Britain, president Hastings Banda was elected as President for life and formed a one party government accumulating wealth and power until 1993 when he was finally voted out of office. Malawi has suffered because one of its leading exports is tobacco. They are poorer than many African Nations and resources are scarce for the villages. With the Aids crisis devestating much of the adult population this has added to the country's challenges.

Perhaps Mr. Pellish can expand on this for us?
